The urge strikes

2009 April 26

So, I’m getting the urge to stray from Slackware. Maybe it’s just teh hype over the new Ubuntu release or maybe I just want to try out ext/4 in general but I’m considering a return to my days of distro sluttery. Yet, on the other hand I’m thinking if it aint broke there’s no need to mess with it. And honestly Slackware is working quite, quite well for me. So, I dunno. I’ve had a BLAG .iso sitting around for awhile now, and I did go and get Jaunty Jackalope plus I’ve still got that Sidux disk I never used…

Well, I’ll just have to wait and see. I don’t know where BLAG is at as far as what is being done with it development wize or anything like that. Ubuntu…well if I did install Jaunty I probably wouldn’t keep it long as nowadays I generally install Ubuntu as a sort of placeholder anyways. And Sidux, well, out of all the comments I’ve recieved here on my Linux posts the Sidux users seemed the most enthusiastic. So I should try it out. I also should have tried out Arch Linux by now. Well, actually I did but totally fumbled a netinst so I could try a different method and see if I have any luck.

This is likely just a passing thing. I mean, a week from now you can probably expect me writing about how I was just too lazy and still too impressed with Slackware to start installing other stuff. Or maybe I’ll just decide to be sort of polyamorous about things and run different distros using a virtual machine while still keeping Slackware as my primary OS.

But after writing about it now I just don’t think I’m going to change anything.

Fuck, you Windows and Mac users have it so easy. Choice is what makes Linux so damn awesome, but sometimes all the choices can be a bit much. Especially if you’re someone who’s incorrigably curious about stuff. I think I’d do better to go be curious about rocks or something, it’s got to be alot easier to find a favorite rock of the year than a favorite Linux distro of the year.

Yeah, temptation may get the better of me one of these days-but every time I’m tempted to go try out different distributions I just think about having to reload and configure Slackware afterwords anyways. Because I know I’d just return to using it within a short time. For serious, it’s that great.
But I’ve considered doing the virtual machine thing, the only thing that’s holding me back is sheer laziness. It would solve some problems, only there’s that certain feeling that comes with rolling the dice and doing a dedicated install…I mean, half the fun comes from the chance of installing a real dud (Like Open SUSE or something) and having to start all over again the hard way.

Temptation will get the better of you one of these days!!

I like what you say about Mac and Windows users having it easy. Choice is a great thing and they don’t know what they’re missing, but dammit there’s sooooo much choice. (I just installed Jackalope last night – I couldn’t resist. It’s like an addiction – you know it’s there waiting on you and it’s only a matter of time before you succumb!)
